A Democrat who served in the Bill Clinton administration and now teaches at the University of California at Berkeley has concluded that impeaching President Trump is not a good idea.
Not because the evidence of wrongdoing isn’t there. Not because there aren’t enough votes in the House and Senate. Not because of anything like that.
It’s because it wouldn’t reverse President Trump’s actions in totality. It wouldn’t erase him from the roster of presidents. It wouldn’t undo the laws he’s signed, the appointments he’s made and the executive orders he’s issued.
Talk radio star Rush Limbaugh was flabbergasted.
“He’s losing his mind! They all are! It’s hilarious.”
The demand for the unprecedented and extra-constitutional “annulment” comes from Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich.
Now a professor at Berkeley, he wrote in Newsweek: “The only way I see the end of Trump is if there’s overwhelming evidence he rigged the 2016 election. In which case impeachment isn’t an adequate remedy. His presidency should be annulled.”
Reich pointed out that if Trump is impeached, “We’d still have his loathsome administration – Pence on down.”
And he fretted that Trump might actually win in 2020, because as a “malignant bullying megalomaniac” he could “pulverize any Democratic opponent.”
Reich speculated that special counsel Robert Mueller has “indisputable evidence that Trump conspired with Russian President Vladimir Putin to rig the 2016 election.”
That would make Trump’s presidency not authorized by the Constitution, and it would take annulment to remedy his actions.
“The only response to an unconstitutional presidency is to annul it,” Reich wrote. “Annulment would repeal all of an unconstitutional president’s appointments and executive actions, and would eliminate the official record of the presidency.”
Limbaugh said: “Do you believe – what are these people fantasizing about? This is unreal! And I still haven’t gotten to the piece de resistance. ‘Impeachment would remedy Trump’s ‘high crimes and misdemeanors.’ But impeachment would not remedy Trump’s unconstitutional presidency because it would leave in place his vice president, White House staff and Cabinet, as well as all the executive orders he issued and all the legislation he signed, and the official record of his presidency.'”
Added Limbaugh: “Now, we’re told that many people say, many smart people on the left, many bright, well educated, increasingly intelligent people, this whole business that Trump cheated and stole the election and that he did so with Putin, we’ve had at least two years of solid investigation of this. There isn’t a shred of evidence for it and there isn’t going to be, but yet look at all of these people that literally are waiting with bated breath and holding out hope that that’s exactly what Robert Mueller has found. He just hasn’t leaked it yet. He’s waiting for just the right time to blow Trump out of the water.”
He continued: “They really believe – I’ve warned everybody, they believe this stuff. They really have talked themselves into believing that this happened. So shocked were they at having lost the presidency, the election in 2016, they can’t fathom this. Even though Barack Obama, their Dear Leader, explained to them countless different times and ways that it would be impossible to rig a presidential election in the way it’s being – in any way.”
Limbaugh said that if anything, the collusion was on the part of Hillary Clinton and the Democrats.
“Now, to you and me, this genuinely is insane. It’s incomprehensible. And they are committed to it. They are totally, completely devoted to this premise, this narrative, this fact. And yet there is no evidence that Trump rigged anything. If anybody did – I’m really sorry for sounding like a broken record on this. But if anybody did, it all happened on the Hillary side.”
