Poll: Voters strongly disagree with Cuomo on American greatness

A supermajority of Americans disagree with Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's assessment of America, according to a new Rasmussen poll.

Cuomo, regarded as a serious contender for the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination, reacted last week to President Trump's signature slogan.

"We're not going to make America great again. It was never that great," Cuomo said.

Rasmussen asked a sampling of 1,000 likely voters if they agree, and 67 percent said no.

Only about one-in-five Democrats agreed with the governor.

Overall, 17 percent were in agreement with Cuomo and 16 percent were undecided.

On Friday, President Trump weighed in, declaring Cuomo's "political career is over."

“Which is worse, Hightax Andrew Cuomo's statement, ‘WE’RE NOT GOING TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, IT WAS NEVER THAT GREAT’ or Hillary Clinton’s ‘DEPLORABLES’ statement,” Trump tweeted.

The president followed up with an answer, saying Cuomo's comment "was a bigger and more incompetent blunder" than Clinton's description of Trump voters during the 2016 election.

"He should easily win his race against a Super Liberal Actress, but his political career is over!"

Cuomo is in a gubernatorial primary race against actress and activist Cynthia Nixon.

He made the controversial comment Wednesday during a bill-signing event.

After stating America "was never that great," he went on to say: "We have not reached greatness, we will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged, we will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of our population, is gone and every woman’s full potential is realized and unleashed and every woman is making her full contribution."

Amid the backlash, a Cuomo spokeswoman clarified that the governor "believes America is great," which will become more evident "when every man, woman, and child has full equality. America has not yet reached its maximum potential."

Cuomo told reporters Friday in a conference call his remarks were "inartful."

"I want to be very clear: Of course America is great and of course America has always been great," Cuomo said. "My family is evidence of American greatness."

He then criticized Trump again, calling him "vindictive, petty and small," asserting that behind the "Make America Great Again" is an effort to return America to a time of greater intolerance and inequality.

"Everything he does is repugnant of our values," Cuomo said.
