The Russian Embassy of South Africa issued a tweet Monday on the anniversary of atomic-bomb attack on the city of Hiroshima that helped end World War II, charging the United States carried out an "inhumane and horrific" act on a civilian target.
"Today marks 73 years since the inhumane and horrific A-bombing of #Hiroshima – not a military target but a city full of civilians incl women & children. 6 August 1945 will forever remain a tragic date in human history. Such tragedy should never be ignored or forgotten #NeverAgain," the Russian embassy said.

The attack, however, was intended to end Japan's deadly aggression, which cost the lives of an estimated 6 million troops from many nations and more than 25 million civilians. The Japanese military killed as many as 14 million civilians and prisoners of war through massacre, human experimentation, starvation and forced labor.
Japan refused to surrender after the Hiroshima attack of Aug. 6, 1945, but an atomic bomb three days later on the city of Nagasaki prompted unconditional surrender, preventing the likelihood of millions of casualties from an invasion of the island nation.
