“To understand the workings of American politics,” wrote the late, great Charles Krauthammer, “you have to understand this fundamental law: Conservatives think liberals are stupid. Liberals think conservatives are evil.”

The truth of that oft-cited sentiment is inescapable in an era when Democrat politicians and media pundits routinely compare President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler and his supporters to Nazis, fascists and white supremacists.

Unfortunately, such hysterical accusations inevitably escalate into mob violence and worse – as they did last summer when U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise was grievously wounded during a mass assassination attempt by an enraged leftwing activist targeting Republican lawmakers at a congressional baseball practice.

After all, if Trump actually were another Hitler, virtually no form of “resistance” – no lies, deception, obstruction, subversion, sedition, violence or armed revolution – would be morally off-limits in the heroic quest to save the world from another Holocaust. Indeed, all-out resistance would become a moral imperative.

Thus it is that we daily witness the surreal spectacles of leftwing mobs in action – of White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump aide Steven Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen all being harassed by frenzied, screaming mobs while trying to eat dinner in various Washington, D.C.-area restaurants (in Sanders’ case, actually being ejected from the premises). We see Florida’s pro-Trump Attorney General Pam Bondi similarly abused and chased out of a Tampa movie theater (ironically there to see the new Mr. Rogers documentary, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”). All the while, Rep. Maxine Waters hysterically urges angry Trump-haters to ambush the president’s staffers everywhere, Obama CIA chief John Brennan accuses Trump of treason, Rep. Steve Cohen calls for a military coup to oust the president, antifa members openly brag to video journalists that they would “murder” the president if he showed up at their rally, actor Peter Fonda tweets “We should rip Barron Trump from his mother’s arms and put him in a cage with pedophiles,” MSNBC contributor Jill Wine-Banks compares the president’s meeting with Vladimir Putin to Pearl Harbor, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Kristallnacht, while another MSNBC pundit, Donny Deutsch, thunders on-air that every single Trump voter in America is – quote – a “Nazi.”

This is textbook mass hysteria, approaching that which led to the Salem witch trials.

Wait a minute, exclaim Americans who are still sane. Hitler murdered 11 million people. Trump has murdered none. Obviously the president isn’t Hitler.

Right. What, then, is really going on?

Why is the left so maniacally obsessed with defaming and demonizing, in the most extreme ways imaginable, not only a president they didn’t vote for and don’t like, but also millions of ordinary, decent, hard-working, law-abiding Americans?

Conservative pundits tell us it’s because the left is obsessed with power and its hysterical Trump Derangement Syndrome is really all about winning the 2018 midterm elections. This is true, of course, but there’s more to it – much more.

‘Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it’

Have you ever wondered why the Ninth Commandment – “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor” – ranks right up there alongside major crimes like “Thou shalt not kill,” “Thou shalt not commit adultery” and “Thou shalt not steal”?

Perhaps because they’re all forms of stealing. Murder is stealing another’s life, adultery is stealing another’s wife (or husband), and “bearing false witness” – in modern terms, slander and false accusation – is stealing another’s good name and, all too often, his happiness and his liberty, and sometimes even his life.

Yet a great many on the left violate this commandment just as easily as breathing. It’s like a heartbeat to them, which were it to cease would mean the end of (political) life as they know it.

Indeed, in the left’s never-ending war to “fundamentally transform” America, its No. 1 battlefield tactic for occupying new ground is its nonstop lying about, demonizing, defaming, pathologizing, intimidating, threatening, criminalizing, suing and prosecuting conservatives, Christians and anyone else opposed to their agenda.

The left’s endless false accusations of the rest of America (as when Hillary Clinton famously said, “You could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it”) has become so commonplace and banal that we’re in danger of becoming numb to it, of rolling our eyes and shrugging our shoulders, and thereby losing sight of just how truly malevolent a force it is. In reality, this leads directly to unending societal disintegration and violence.

The whole modus operandi of violent mobs like antifa in branding conservatives and Christians as “fascists” is to equate ideas they don’t like with violence, in order to justify their own actual violence – and then calling it “self-defense.” This is insane, of course, but it’s a natural extension of the left’s total reliance on “bearing false witness against their neighbors,” which is to say, against their fellow Americans.

Since, as Krauthammer observed, those on the left have convinced themselves conservatives are not just wrong but evil – that Donald Trump is not just a bad president but Hitler, and his supporters not just ignorant hillbillies who shop at Wal-Mart but racists, fascists and Klansmen – lying becomes justified in their minds as an essential war tactic. Indeed, for people dedicated body and soul to overturning the 2016 presidential election, Trump just has to be Hitler, since no lesser opponent or cause could begin to justify their almost two years of non-stop hysterical lying and lawbreaking.

Putting aside this grotesque – and yes, stupid – delusion that Trump is Hitler (or if you prefer, a “traitorous” Russian super-agent) and all conservatives are Nazis, the net result of the left’s orgiastic violation of the Ninth Commandment is the creation of widespread fear and intimidation throughout the country. This is precisely how agendas that are essentially suicidal, like open borders – or even stark raving mad, like men claiming to be women and demanding to use women’s locker rooms and showers – become not just widely accepted, but fiercely defended with the force of law. Not through logical persuasion, since logic is entirely absent, but by means of raw intimidation.

The dark creative power of lying

But let’s go a little deeper. To the left, lying is much more than just a battle tactic.

Remember that leftism is at core a quasi-religion, one that rejects the Judeo-Christian moral foundations of Western civilization, but rather, is predicated on moral relativism and radical multicultural equality, enforced by the state, leading to an entirely new and (leftists believe) better reality than has ever before existed on planet earth. Combine these two things – a utopian zeal and a subjective, emotion-based and ever-changing idea of what truth is – and the act of lying turns out to be quite literally a creative power for the left, a power to conjure up the new paradisiacal realm they dream of, and to discredit and replace the reality they hold in such contempt.

How is this possible? As I said, to the left, truth is subjective and personal – there’s “your truth” and “my truth.”

For example, right now the left is in paroxysms over President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, a constitutional originalist. Why? Because to leftists, the Constitution is a “living document” – their phrase – which means, in less elegant but more honest terms, the Constitution is whatever the left wants it to be. Thus, a Supreme Court justice who interprets America’s supreme law according to its actual (original) meaning is an enemy of the progressive left’s notion of changing, or fluid, reality.

It is this same principle of fluid, feeling-based reality that is bearing so much bizarre fruit these days: For all of human history – in every era, nation, language, religion and political system – there have been exactly two genders: male and female. Today there are, depending on which list you consult, 33 different genders, or 36, or 51, or 63, or 67, with more no doubt on the way. Former Olympic decathlon superstar Bruce Jenner was a man until, fully male in every respect, he appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair in a woman’s bathing suit claiming he was now a woman – and was widely praised for it!

There are no outer limits to today’s explosion of fluid, you-are-what-you-feel reality. Former NAACP official Rachel Dolezal has long claimed to be African-American, even though she is genetically entirely Caucasian – a white girl. Another “transracial” person, Florida resident Ja Du, is a white man who claims he is a Filipino woman – because, you see, he feels like a Filipino woman. A Toronto resident in his 50s, Stefonknee Wolscht, concluded he was transgender at age 46, left his wife and seven children and today lives as a 6-year-old girl with his adoptive “mommy” and “daddy.” Another “trans-age” man, 38-year-old Joseph Roman of Chicago, was arrested on felony sexual assault charges for attacking three girls, aged 6 to 8, but reportedly told police there was an extenuating circumstance – that he is a “9-year-old trapped in an adult’s body.”

When our reality is determined by our feelings – whether people are uncomfortable with their “assigned” gender and feel “trapped in the wrong body,” or starving and dangerously skinny anorexic girls believe they’re fat, or people who feel uncomfortable with one of their arms or legs have it amputated, or who dislike being able to see make themselves blind, or deaf, or paraplegics (yes, all these things actually happen, it’s called “trans-ableism”) – truth, sanity and society are all casualties.

The hard left, as reflected in its multiple infatuations with Marxism/socialism, with radical equality, and with total sexual freedom – all utopian fantasies that always lead to unthinkable human suffering and societal ruin – is rooted in a blanket denial of the laws of God, of human nature, morality, economics and the hard-won lessons of history. Instead, the left attempts to create its idea of heaven on earth by lying, because there’s no more fundamental or effective way to create an alternate reality.

Consider that according to the Bible’s creation account in Genesis, the very first lie, spoken in the Garden of Eden, ushered into existence a whole new alternate reality for humanity. Whether you take that story as literally true or metaphorical, there’s no escaping the fact that lies constitute the basic “cellular units” – the fundamental building blocks – of all evil. Lies lead to every bad thing from “small stuff” like defamation and voter fraud right up to war and genocide.

But the purpose of lying is always the same: Bend reality to your will.

Here’s how I briefly address this point in “The Snapping of the American Mind,” in the chapter titled “Magic Words”:

To super-ambitious, vainglorious leaders such as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, for whom personal ambition and ideology – however irrational – are their only reality, lying is a vital and creative power. Lies open doors that would otherwise remain shut.

Thus in a very real sense, political lies are “magic words,” the invocation of which represents the exercise of real power – power to impress voters, raise money, demonize critics, win elections, excuse failures and transform a nation. Ordinary people don’t possess this power, as they are constrained from such brazen lying by their conscience and/or fear of being caught. But highly narcissistic people like Obama and Clinton feel they have the freedom – indeed, the mandate – to reshape America by creatively speaking into existence an alternate version of reality, without regard for any higher standard of truth. In other words, to lie.

Stupid or evil?

One final mystery begs an explanation: Historically, it’s irrefutable that the left is responsible for bringing far more evil into this world than the right, Exhibit A being the 100-200 million dead under atheistic communism during the 20th century. Even in today’s America, Democrats back obviously disastrous policies like abolishing border enforcement, and they lie constantly about Republicans, even accusing them of the very evils they themselves commit – like engaging in pre-election “Russian collusion.”

So how is it that, as Charles Krauthammer said, liberals regard conservatives as evil, but conservatives see liberals as merely stupid? The answer reveals another truth about what we cryptically call “the left” and “the right.”

Conservatives – remember, those are the people who aren’t at war with Western Judeo-Christian sensibilities – tend as a whole to have a more mature view of their fellow human beings, including those in the grip of evil. So while liberals may advocate more “evil” than conservatives do – like abortion, which has killed 60 million American babies in the last few decades – conservatives tend not to describe their countrymen in thrall to immoral leftwing ideas as “evil.” Just stupid. Why? Because most conservatives understand that many of these people are just confused, misguided, angry, ignorant, indoctrinated – perhaps in the grip of evil, but not evil themselves. There’s a world of difference.

Most people don’t say an alcoholic is “evil,” although we might well say he or she is caught up in the “evils of alcohol.” That’s how mature people think. But to hard leftists, who have abandoned any deep Judeo-Christian understanding of the human condition in favor of reinventing what they think of as an all-new, superior reality, the niceties of “hating the sin but not the sinner” don’t compute. They hate you. They think your policies are cruel and destructive – so you’re evil. Or to use Hillary Clinton’s words, you’re “deplorable” and “irredeemable.”

When conservatives see liberals as “stupid,” it’s usually because liberals are doing or advocating something evil – but the more charitable Christian conservative ethos is to regard them only as naïve, ignorant and indoctrinated, or at worst selfish, stupid, consumed with hatred, power-mad, or maybe even insane – but not “evil,” which has a ring of permanence and hopelessness. From the Christian viewpoint, there’s always the realization that “they know not what they do,” and the hope that no matter how far a person has fallen and how much evil he or she has done, they might experience repentance and redemption one day. It’s called grace, and we all need it.

Finally, let us remember that the word “devil” – diablo in Spanish, diabolos in Greek – literally means “slanderer, accuser.” Think about that, lefties. The Ninth Commandment surely was meant as a giant warning sign urging us not to go down that road. Unfortunately, today’s left still sees that dark and forbidden path as its superhighway to paradise on earth.
