A member of the Detroit school board is demanding that the district remove the name of Dr. Ben Carson from one of its schools.

“It is synonymous with having Trump’s name on our school in blackface,” Lamar Lemmons told the Washington Post.

Carson, the secretary of housing and urban development and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, ran for president in 2016.

A graduate of the Detroit school system in 1969, he went on to become a world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, operating on unborn children and separating conjoined twins.

Apparently, Carson’s brief association with President Trump merits “calling for someone to pry the letters off the high school that bears Carson’s name,” said the the Washington Post reported.

Lemmons complained that Carson “is doing Trump’s bidding, and he has adversely affected the African-American community in Detroit as well as the nation with his housing policies. And he’s allied himself with a president that says he is a white nationalist and sends dog whistles that even the deaf can hear.”

It’s not the only attack that Carson has endured in recent years. The far-leftists at the Southern Poverty Law Center smeared him in 2015 by putting him on its list of “haters”.

SPLC quickly retreated amid public outcry.

Wrote WND CEO Joseph Farah at the time: “Apparently, the racketeering outfit that poses as a ‘progressive’ civil liberties group realized it had crossed a bridge too far in its smear efforts against, quite possibly, the most respected black leader in America (and, yes, I include Barack Obama and all members of his administration and frequent White House visitors such as Al Sharpton).”

He explained: “The group’s stock-in-trade is raising hundreds of millions of dollars through fanning the flames of phantom threats posed almost exclusively by those who love America and its Constitution. The others are a collection of actual scum-of-the-earth racists, neo-Nazis and other certifiable lunatics who, through guilt by association, are intended to reflect badly on the liberty proponents and Christians and Jews on the list, who are the SPLC’s real targets.

“The ultimate objective with SPLC is raising money – big money. It does this through lawsuits – lots of lawsuits, occasionally even on behalf of real victims of racism. It pockets most of the money raised through heart-wrenching direct-mail pitches.”

Lemmons said he once took his children to hear Carson speak and would have continued to respect him, if only he’d stayed out of politics.

“Had he stayed in medicine, irrespective of his political philosophy or how he voted in private, we would have been happy to put his name on a school.” Lemmons said. “We looked at him as an honored son. He has since, in many of our eyes, disgraced himself.

“What really bothers me is he is a person that grew up in poverty and took advantage of all the social service safety nets that allowed him to have some semblance of normality and get an education,” Lemmons said in the Post interview. “And he’s one that’s now removing that ladder, that rung in the ladder for others to excel as he did. He is a person who advocates pulling oneself up by the bootstraps, but now he is removing the boots and the strap.”

The Detroit Free Press reported the board earlier this week endorsed a process to give schools new names.
