Three Muslim residents of Lansing, Michigan, were arrested Monday afternoon for conspiring to provide material support to ISIS, the Justice Department announced.

A criminal complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan charged that Muse Abdikadir Muse was on his way to Mogidishu, Somalia, to fight for ISIS when he was arrested. Members of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force apprehended him at the Gerald R. Ford Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after he checked in for a flight.

Law enforcement later arrested his alleged co-conspirators, Mohamud Abdikadir Muse and Mohamed Salat Haji.

The conspiracy charge is punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison.

The Justice Department said Muse Muse and Haji allegedly said that if they were unable to travel overseas to fight for ISIS, they might use a car for “a martyrdom operation” to run down non-believers in the United States.

All three defendants are naturalized U.S. citizens who were born in Kenya.

The complaint affidavit alleged Haji and Mohamud Muse aided in the purchase of a ticket for Muse Muse and gave him a ride to the airport to travel to fight for ISIS.

All three men pledged allegiance to ISIS through videos they recorded themselves, the complaint alleges.

Noting the arrests, Jihad Watch Director Robert Spencer commented: “Muse Abdikadir Muse, Mohamud Abdikadir Muse and Mohamed Salat Haji didn’t exist in a vacuum. Where did they learn Islam? Where did they go to mosque? Does anyone care to investigate such questions, or would doing so be ‘Islamophobic’?”
