New York Mayor Bill De Blasio, who previously told his city’s residents there’s lots of money out there, it’s just in “the wrong hands,” has doubled down on a governing philosophy his critics call “straight communism.”
Now he wants to take over private property.
According to Fox News, the leftist politician “is rolling out a new plan that would potentially allow the city government to seize buildings of landlords who force tenants out.”
He said he wants a “Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants” that would have the right to confiscate property if landlords are trying “to force tenants out by making the property unlivable.”
“He said that in the event the government intervenes, the buildings would then be controlled by a ‘community nonprofit,'” the report said.
“When a landlord tries to push out a tenant by making their home unlivable, a team of inspectors and law enforcement agents will be on the ground to stop it in time,” he threatened. “If the fines and the penalties don’t cut it, we will seize their buildings and we will put them in the hands of a community nonprofit that will treat tenants with the respect they deserve.”
He said the city already is reviewing local laws regarding the management of “upwards of 40 of the most distressed multiple dwelling buildings annually and transition them to responsible, mission driven ownership.”
Critics said it was nothing but communism.
“My first reaction was: Is this communist Cuba?” said state Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis, who ran against De Blasio in the 2017 mayoral race.
“I can say that as a daughter of Cuban refugees who fled Castro’s Cuba in 1959, this is what happened to her family, she had her home taken, my grandfather had his gas station taken,” Malliotakis said in the Fox News report.
She pointed out that some of the biggest housing controversies have occurred because of mismanagement by the NYC Housing Authority itself.
“Any attempt to seize property will face a court challenge and the mayor himself comes up with these ideas, throws stuff out there and doesn’t know how he intends to make it happen,” she charged.
De Blasio said just weeks ago he wants the biggest health care coverage plan available for everyone, “including those in the country illegally.”
And he said he thinks residents want a government that determines which buildings are built, how high, who lives there and what the rent will be.
The Blaze reported only days ago De Blasio was confident there is enough money to fund government programs.
“It’s just in the wrong hands,” he said.
“I said in the speech this has been an agenda from Reagan’s administration right on through to Trump’s — to take money from working people and give it to the 1 percent. So when I say there’s plenty of money in this country, it’s just in the wrong hands, it means to say we need policies that give back to working people — like guaranteeing health care for all.”
