Why Trump will win in 2020

By Patrice Lewis

This week, the media and internet exploded after witnessing the horrific behavior of Catholic Covington High School students who had a stand-off with Native American activist Nathan Phillips on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. One student, Nick Sandmann, was caught on camera smirking at Phillips. The left was outraged by this MAGA-hat wearing pro-life Trump supporter. How dare he flaunt his white privilege? How dare he display racist behavior, clear evidence of his white supremacy?

And on and on it went, with the mainstream media and Hollywood working themselves into a veritable lather of outrage.

And then it all fell apart.

Far from being guilty of the loathsome behavior of which he was accused, Sandmann had displayed a level of stoicism, maturity, dignity and self-control no leftist worth zhis salt could ever hope to duplicate. The high school boys were merely caught in the middle of an acrimonious exchange between two diverse groups, the Black Hebrew Israelite movement and some Native American demonstrators attending an Indigenous Peoples March. The boys were verbally dragged into the conflict after being taunted and yelled at by the Black Hebrew Israelites (who called them, among much else, “Child-molesting incest babies, future school-shooters, dirty, racist crackers” for no discernible reason beyond their skin color – now tell me again, who’s racist?). Nor did the boys approach Native American elder Nathan Phillips; he’s the one who confronted them.

Despite the harassment, the boys weren’t threatening, name-calling, mocking or otherwise acting in any way disrespectfully. Further video coverage confirms this and completely exonerates the behavior of the students. Even the Atlantic – hardly a conservative news source – admits, “The media botched the Covington Catholic story – and the damage to their credibility will be lasting.” (This analysis of the whole scenario by the Atlantic is one of the best I’ve read.)

But none of these indisputable facts made any difference to the hysterical claims of progressives and the mainstream media. Sandmann’s mother’s workplace received thousands – thousands! – of emails and phone calls, demanding they stop employing her. Covington High School closed due to the level of threats they received. The Sandmanns were forced to flee their home. Websites for Covington Catholic High School and the Catholic Diocese of Covington were taken down. Colleges around the nation are being urged not to accept any students from Covington High School.

And on and on it went. The left and the mainstream media literally created a bogeyman out of thin air. They created a firestorm, promises of violence and death threats around an event that didn’t happen. They attempted to ruin the lives of these students and their families over nothing.

Anyone who didn’t fall lockstep into the frenzy was mowed down. Even Hollywood celebrities gracious enough to apologize for erroneously jumping to the wrong conclusion (such as Jamie Lee Curtis) received hate mail for daring to apologize.

Now here’s the thing. The situation with the Covington students is just the latest in a long string of insane, frothing-at-the-mouth attacks from the extreme left on innocent people who just happen to be Trump supporters. The mainstream media deliberately fan any small flame into a raging wildfire of hatred. Those on the right side of the spectrum look at this in disgust and move further to the right.

But it’s not just those on the right taking note. The left is, too. Many progressives are looking at this kind of media madness and saying, “Whoa, back off!”

A lot of people on the left are waking up to the fact that the constant, unfounded, unverified, loathsome accusations are not only hurting their cause, it’s painting them in a bad light. Despite differences in opinions, most leftists aren’t interested in smashing high school students into the ground, never to rise up again. They simply want to work, raise their families and contribute meaningfully to society. Threats, intimidation and violence don’t contribute to those goals. These kinds of actions leave them ashamed and embarrassed to be associated with the extremists.

If Trump’s presidency has done nothing else, it has illustrated how vicious, ugly, cruel, irrational, illogical and hateful the extreme left actually is. For many millions of moderate leftists, the blinders have been stripped off, and they’re seeing the truth behind the mask. It’s why the #WalkAway movement has been quietly gaining strength as liberals leave the Democratic Party in droves. No sane leftist – and please note the qualifier sane – wants a teenage boy’s life ruined over a momentary encounter on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in which he literally did nothing wrong.

The extreme leftists are becoming more extreme. “Our children were used as pawns for an ulterior leftist agenda,” said one resident of the town where Covington High School is located. She’s right. The whole purpose of these senseless attacks – and others like it – is to intimidate and silence opposition. In a series of tweets Tuesday, Trump emphasized that perspective, saying the students of Covington Catholic “have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be.”

But the left is forgetting one important thing: Voting is a private act, not a public one. In the privacy of the voting booth, the left can’t control what little boxes anyone checks. Unless they’re meddling with the voting machines (a distinct possibility, but a subject for another column), their actions, intimidation and violence will only convince more and more people that Trump is the obvious choice for 2020.

The author of the Atlantic piece, Caitlin Flanagan, chastises the New York Times: “You were partly responsible for the election of Trump because you are the most influential newspaper in the country, and you are not fair or impartial. Millions of Americans believe you hate them and that you will causally harm them. Two years ago, they fought back against you, and they won. If Trump wins again, you will once again have played a small but important role in that victory.” [Emphasis added.]

So to all you hysterical, irrational leftist activists: Keep up the good work. The more insane behavior you demonstrate, the more hateful labels you slap on regular, ordinary people, the more you turn against your own – in other words, the more you force left, right and center to choose between frothing-at-the-mouth rabid lunacy and calm maturity – the more Trump is guaranteed an unprecedented landslide victory in the 2020 elections.

Just sayin’.
