President Barack Obama refused to endorse the controversial idea of giving African-Americans trillions of dollars to atone for the evils of slavery. So did Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and most of today’s dozens of Democratic presidential aspirants.
But days ago, three Democratic candidates – Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, California Senator Kamala Harris and former Obama cabinet member Julian Castro of Texas – embraced giving blacks a stratospheric fortune in reparations. Others soon may follow.
For Warren and Harris, this latest “ginormous” giveaway was their way to blast past rivals in the Democrats’ mad race to win the radical left’s checkered black-and-red flag of victory. For Castro, it was his chance as an almost-unknown Latino to buy the attention and votes of African-Americans.
Taking a pro-reparations position is a gamble. For a generation, polls have found that up to 84 percent of white voters oppose this huge political redistribution of wealth based on race … and whites remain, by far, the biggest group of voters in America.
But Democrats face another existential risk. Polling shows that in 2020 Donald Trump could win 20 percent or more of the African-American vote. Democrats have made themselves so dependent on getting 90 percent or more of the black vote that losing even 20 percent of it could mean electoral doom, potentially forever.
This is why Democrats go to radical extremes to stir up black hatred and racial polarization. Is this why actor Jussie Smollett, a rabid Trump-hater, was reportedly willing to prompt a race war by concocting a fake attack on himself by supposedly “Make America Great Again” racists? Smollett had been campaigning with Kamala Harris, so did they synchronize his fake attackers using a noose with her proposed anti-lynching legislation?
Do the horrors of slavery merit the recompense of reparations? They certainly do, on the same terms that Japanese-Americans unjustly interned in Manzanar and other camps during World War II received reparation payments of $20,000 apiece in 1988; these reparations went only to 82,000 actually interned, not to their descendants born after World War II.
Every black American “legally” enslaved in the United States deserved reparations. But slavery ended by 1865, and any who were then slaves have died. Those who have never been slaves deserve no reparations for slavery, however much they might have been economically disadvantaged by racism.
Progressives try to evade other problems with reparations. Are we to pay their huge costs by taxing those whose ancestors came to America after slavery ended? Or those whose ancestors were never slave owners, including 3 out of 4 Southerners? Or those like my ancestors who fought on the Union side to free those held in slavery?
If you favor reparations for those with American slave ancestors, would you also favor giving vast money to the descendants of the slave owners? This needs an answer, because African-Americans also carry the evil antebellum heritage of slave rape by plantation owners; the average black in America carries in his or her DNA from 14 to 27 percent “white” genes from the slave owners. Give reparations to the descendants of slaves and you also give it to benefit the living genes of slave owners.
Kamala Harris was born of a Jamaican father (appalled by her boasting of marijuana use) and a Tamil mother from India; she is not qualified to receive the American slave reparations she supports. The black half of Barack Obama was Kenyan and carried no American slave ancestry, despite attempts by leftist genealogists to claim some. Obama’s Muslim family was never slaves in Africa, but they owned slaves and hated the British for ending slavery in Kenya.
So who should pay for American slave reparations? Surely not the innocent people or the government that fought to end slavery. The logical candidate is the Democratic Party – America’s racist party of the slave owners, the Ku Klux Klan, Jim Crow, Bull Connor, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s racist internment of Japanese-Americans, and virtually all the evils Ta-Nehisi Coates describes in his 2014 essay “The Case for Reparations.”
Genocide is more evil than slavery. Why did Elizabeth Warren propose reparations for blacks, not also Native Americans as she pretended to be? Democrats fanatically support Planned Parenthood, whose progressive founder Margaret Sanger advocated birth control to limit “the unfit”; “African-Americans make up between 12 percent and 13 percent of the American population,” writes historian Victor Davis Hanson, “but account for as many as 35 percent of all abortions.”
In a 2009 interview, wrote Hanson, leftist icon Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg declared: “Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of.”
The Democratic Party should pay African-Americans $100 trillion from its own vast wealth – not the public treasury – in reparations, then have its politicians and appointees resign from all government offices forever.
By removing their toxic evil that has poisoned America for most of its history, Democrats could achieve what Coates seeks from reparations: “A national reckoning that would lead to spiritual renewal.”
