It's not a boy or girl. It's a 'theyby'

Millions of parents in America celebrate the fact that their newborn baby is a boy or a girl.

Ari Dennis of Orlando, Florida, is not among them.

She's raising her 11-month-old baby Sparrow as a "theyby," where the child is considered neither a boy nor girl, but will determine its own gender at a later stage in life.

"We did not assign a sex at birth which means when they were born, they had genitals, we know what they are, we just chose to acknowledge that those genitals don't indicate anything about gender," Dennis told WTSP-TV.

Even Sparrow's birth certificate says sex unknown.

Ari says the family was inspired to raise Sparrow without an assigned gender after her older child, Hazel, discovered gender around age four.

"We are in no way prohibiting Sparrow from having a gender, and we're not forcing them to be one gender or another," she told the station.

"There's no way this can go wrong," Dennis said. "People will be like 'Oh the child will be confused!' No. If gender is really something in you, then no one's going to change that."

"There's nothing wrong with pink. There's nothing wrong with blue," Dennis said. "There's something wrong with forcing kids into roles."

Dennis is far from alone in making this choice for her kids, as there's a Facebook page titled "Parenting Theybies: using they/them/their pronouns for kids from the start."

Among the rules on the closed page: "There is no such thing as biological sex. While people have bodies, chromosomes, and genitals, calling this 'sex' is a social construction rather than a biological fact. If you don't understand this, do some reading on your own. If you don't agree, this is not the right group for you. Posts referring to biological sex will be flagged."
