New AG urged to launch investigation of Facebook

Warning that social-media companies like Facebook, Twitter and Google/YouTube, which already are wired to be leftist, have “an unprecedented power to manipulate and sway elections,” a coalition of conservative organizations is asking new Attorney General William Barr to order them investigated.

“Such sweeping power, combined with near monopolistic dominance in the marketplace, and in conjunction with deep one-sided liberal partisan bias within all the organizations, is cause for alarm,” a letter the coalition sent to Barr explains.

The effort was being led by the Media Research Center President Brent Bozell, and the letter was published by CNS News, a division of the MRC.

“These organizations present a threat not merely to conservatives in the United States, but indeed our free market economic system and the very viability of the U.S. political system,” the letter said. “Respecting these entities’ own constitutional rights, we believe there nevertheless is ample probable cause of antitrust violations and of conspiracy to violate the constitutional rights of conservatives, and possible collusion to violate laws governing America’s campaign finance system and elections.”

The signatures joining Bozell’s included Saul Anuzis of the 60 Plus Association, Gary Bauer of American Values, Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage, Susan Carleson of the American Civil Rights Union, Elaine Donnelly of the Center for Military Readiness, William Donohue of the Catholic League, Gene Mills of the Louisiana Family Forum, Terry Schilling of the American Principles Project, Tim Wildmon of the American Family Association and more.

The letter, dated Thursday, congratulates Barr on his confirmation to the position.

“Since January of 2018, the Media Research Center has conducted a thorough analysis of claims made by conservatives that they are being censored on social media. We lead a coalition of more than 40 organizations that expose the censorship of conservative voices on social media. We have witnessed first hand the bias of these organizations. Facebook, Twitter, and Google/YouTube represent existential threats to the conservative movement and indeed American society as a whole,” it explains.

“Never in human history have companies been this large and influential. They have the ability to control so much of what we read and say every moment of the day – on a global scale. Their abuses pose a growing, massive threat to the ideals of free speech that this nation was founded on.”

The letter gives some details of what is known about the media giants:

Regarding Google: Its charity gave $250,000 to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has a “dubious” reputation for attacking legitimate organizations it calls “hate groups,” like the Family Research Council. It also has admitted trying to influence the election in 2016 for Hillary Clinton, and its liberal content outnumbers conservative content 4 to 1.

Regarding Facebook: It has many allegations of blocking pro-life content and the New York Times found the company’s review process has “gaps, biases, and outright errors.” Facebook also had to apologize after banning Rev. Franklin Graham over a two-year-old post. It also admits it worked with far-left groups during elections.

About Twitter: CEO Jack Dorsey has admitted his agenda is to be biased. And it suspended talk-radio host Lars Larson for defending police who shot and killed a suspect.

The problem is the influence those companies hold, the letter said.

According to Statista, the number of U.S. Twitter users is expected to pass 70 million in 2020, Facebook reaches an estimated 211.3 million and Google “generated 63.2 percent of all core search queries in the United States.”

“Americans are distrustful of these social media organizations because they have good reason to be,” the letter said. “Their institutional bias against conservatives, along with their massive influence, makes for a dangerous combination and one which can deliberately tilt the outcome of elections.”
