As many as 15 Democrats already have declared their intent to seek the party’s nomination for president in 2020.
So each one must try to distinguish himself or herself from the crowd.
Do something different. Say something outlandish.
One candidate, Andrew Yang, is talking up universal basic income, the idea of the government handing out a regular sum of cash to everyone, regardless of employment status. But others are endorsing that.
So Yang is promising to oppose circumcision.
That got the attention of talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh.
“Our last caller had many things on her mind, including the revelation that this new hero to the left in their presidential sweepstakes, a guy named Andrew Yang, actually predicted that whites will be shooting up Asian churches in a generation. I had to go find this. Right here it is. It’s at a website called Flag and Cross. ‘Democrat Candidate Says Next Generation of Whites Will ‘Shoot Up Asian Churches.’ This is not a joke,” he said.
“So we have audio sound bites of this guy. His name is Andrew Yang. He is a big believer in universal basic income, and he has taken a strong stance publicly against circumcision. He ‘revealed in a little-noticed tweet last week that he was against [circumcision]. In an interview with the Daily Beast, he said that if he were elected he would incorporate that view into public policy, mainly by pushing initiatives meant to inform parents that they don’t need to [cut their infants foreskin] for health reasons,” Limbaugh said.
“A presidential directive on anti-circumcision. You probably don’t know that there is a thing called the National Organization Circumcision Information Resource Centers. NOCIRC. Now, you’ve heard me talk about them. I’ve talked about them over the years whenever the subject comes up. They’ve got videos. They’ve got visual aides. They give away all kinds of promotional material to people who will support the no-circumcision movement. They’re out in San Francisco,” he said.
