Reading “High school holy war: Bible verses vs. LGBT pride,” I am struck at the ignorance/apathy of the people in Ohio who allow public education and the state legislature to allow the rights of conscience be violated by the schools, and it is the students who are punished. Students are not being taught the Northwest Ordinance nor the history of education.
Massachusetts and then Connecticut led the nation in establishing school laws (The Old Deluder Laws, 1647/48), and Bible reading was required. “Religion, morality and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind …”
Tina Helsinger is right to protest her daughter being punished by a school system that teaches the rights of conscience for atheists and unbelievers and not for Christians.
