For a long time, much was not understood about abortion. In fact, when Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun wrote the 1973 opinion mandating legalized abortion throughout America, he said nobody really knew if the unborn were persons.
At least that’s what he said, commenting formally in his written opinion.
“If this suggestion of personhood is established,” he warned at the time, “[The pro-abortion] case, of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the [14th] Amendment.”
That was then.
This is now.
“As I stood among thousands of New Yorkers and watched the sonogram of Abby Johnson’s unborn child simulcast live, it occurred to me how difficult it has become to support abortion in the modern era,” explained WND columnist Bob Just, who attended a unique pro-life event in New York’s Times Square on Saturday.
“After all, not only can a young mother watch her unborn child move in real time, but thanks to modern video technology, she can also watch a National Geographic video documenting every amazing stage of her child’s formation.”
Added Just, “This is not our parents’ abortion era.”
Just is an award-winning filmmaker, political candidate and community leader, a veteran national talk show host and former VP of Talk Radio Network and longtime WND columnist and commentator for The Dove Radio/TV.
His comments came after he attended a Manhattan event where images of the unborn were displayed on giant screens erected by the Focus on the Family ministry.
The goal of the “Alive from New York” event was to let people “#SeeLifeClearly” and be witness to the evidence that a baby in the womb “is fully human, fully alive and fully worthy of protection,” Focus explained.
“The sanctity of life is currently under siege across the country, with elected leaders pushing for unrestricted abortion up to the moment of birth,” the Colorado Springs-based group said in a statement. “Some politicians have even suggested that infanticide is a viable option for babies who survive the procedure. These developments grieve God’s heart, and they grieve the heart of every American who affirms the value and dignity of human life.”
On May 4, 2019, 4D ultrasound footage will enable people in Times Square to #SeeLifeClearly and to consider the undeniable scientific evidence that a baby in the womb is fully human, fully alive and fully worthy of protection. #AlivefromNewYork https://t.co/mzG9A816QQ

Just interviewed Abby Johnson, the former Planned Parenthood worker who abruptly left the industry when she was summoned to help with an abortion and saw what happened.
It is her story that inspired “Unplanned,” the stunningly successfully pro-life movie.
She said pro-abortion activists actually are fighting for the pro-life side, probably inadvertently.
Just referenced the recent comments by Virginia Gov. Ralph Wortham, who talked about a baby being born and being made comfortable, and then there would be a “discussion” between the mother and doctor about the life of the little boy or girl.
Critics charged he was advocating infanticide.
About the same time, the New York legislature adopted a law allowing abortion at any time for any reason.
“I think that what’s happening throughout these different states, these bills legislators are putting forward, have swung the pendulum so far to the left,” she said.
“They are now completely out of touch with, No. 1, scientific reality. I think everybody can see that.”
Then, she said, they are out of touch with their constituents.
She cited polling by the Marist organization around the New York adoption of its abortion-for-all standard.
“Before the vote in New York 20 percent [of Democrats] identified as pro-life. A poll a month later, after the law passes, 34 percent.”
She said the pro-abortion forces actually are “sabotaging” their own effort.
Focus on the Family President Jim Daly explained in an online report, “It’s a confirmation of what we’ve long known. There are many people who don’t want the world to see these images of pre-born life because the abortion industry is predicated on a lie – namely that a baby is just a blob of tissue inside the womb. It’s not. It’s a baby.”
