A Christian doctor has been fired from his government position for saying he would decline a transgender person’s demand to use preferred pronouns.
Dr. David Mackereth of the United Kingdom lost his contract with the Department of Work and Pensions as a disability benefits assessor after a manager posed a hypothetical conversation to him.
“If you have a man six foot tall with a beard who says he wants to be addressed as ‘she’ and ‘Mrs’, would you do that?” the manager asked.
Mackereth, 56 and a father of four, said he would decline the request, resulting in his firing.
He now works in an emergency room in Shropshire and is suing the government for discrimination on the grounds his religious beliefs were violated.
He said in a statement submitted to authorities, “If you believe in gender fluidity, gender is no more than one’s own fantasy about oneself.”
The Daily Telegraph of London reported “the trained theologian and ‘unashamed’ Christian, who has 30 years’ medical experience, secured a job as a Health and Disability Assessor at Birmingham’s Fiveways assessment center in May 2018.”
But he was suspended the next month, he said, after his boss, James Owen, questioned him.
When ordered to follow the “process,” Mackereth replied, “I am a Christian and in good conscience cannot do what the DWP is requiring of me.”
He pointed out the discrimination at a recent hearing in his case.
“If something like that happened in a church setting – people being pulled out of a pew, questioned, and then excommunicated – that would be seen as an outrageous example of religious intolerance and bigotry,” Mackereth said.
Authorities charge his beliefs are in violation of the nation’s Equality Act.
But the doctor argued that in a free society, someone claiming to be offended is “not a good enough reason to censor my beliefs and coerce me to act contrary to my conscience.”
He pointed out that only until recently, a man claiming he’s not a man was “considered by medics to be delusional and a symptom of a medical disorder.”
Andrea Williams of the Christian Legal Center said Mackereth is a “Christian hero.”
Religion commentator Todd Starnes commented: “Get ready, America – because it won’t be long until Christians in this nation will be forced to violate their deeply held religious beliefs to accommodate the militant sex and gender revolutionaries.”
