Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Ilhan Omar D-Minn., certainly are among the most well-known members of the House, but they are very unpopular among Democrats in swing states and could cost the party the presidency and the House in 2020, according to an internal party poll.
Only 22 percent of voters had a favorable view of Ocasio-Cortez. And even worse, only 9 percent viewed Omar favorably, reported Axios.
Axios said the firm that conducted the May poll gave the news outlet the result on the condition that it not be named because it works "with all parts of the party."
"If all voters hear about is AOC, it could put the [House] majority at risk," a top Democrat involved in the 2020 congressional races told Axios.
The Democrat said Ocasio-Cortez is "getting all the news and defining everyone else’s races."
"Socialism is toxic to these voters."
Socialism was viewed favorably by 18 percent and unfavorably by 69 percent of the voters.
The firm polled 1,003 likely general-election voters who are white and have two years or less of college education.
It found Democrats performing better with these voters than in 2016, although still not as well as in 2018.
The poll was taken long before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's criticism of Ocasio-Cortez, Omar and two other far-left freshman congresswoman who comprise what has become known as "the squad."
Last week, Ocasio-Cortez criticized Pelosi for her "explicit singling out of newly elected women of color."
But the House speaker defended the four in a tweet Sunday in response to President Trump's controversial tweets.
"When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to 'Make America Great Again' has always been about making America white again," she wrote. "Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power."
Trump wrote Sunday via Twitter "the Radical Left Congresswomen" should apologize to the nation and to Israel for the "terrible things they have said." Writing that they "originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe," he said "they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."
