Have you ever wondered what’s behind the left’s undisguised and unrestrained hatred of the founding documents of our nation (Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence)? I mean, we’re talking genuine hostility toward the nation’s origins. We’re talking about politicians blatantly and proudly ignoring the rules. We’re talking people who want simply to trash these documents and start again, rebuilding America according to their utopian ideals, a “new nation predicated on race, class, and gender identity politics agendas,” in the words of Victor Davis Hanson.
I think I found the answer.
In a column by Chuck Norris, he quotes an article by historian Stephen McDowell entitled “Christianity and the Constitution,” who in turn quotes a prestigious literary journal from 1867 (before political correctness interfered with factual data), which stated, “[T]he American system is the political expression of Christian ideas.”
Duh. It’s obvious!
Anyone who has researched where the Founding Fathers got their ideas as they wrote the most brilliant political documents in the history of the world knows Christianity was the single biggest influence behind the verbiage. That’s why they wrote these famous words in the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
These truths are SELF-EVIDENT, folks. That means it’s so obvious that it almost doesn’t need to be put on paper. And what is self-evident? That our rights derive from our Creator, not the government.
“The power and form of the Declaration and the Constitution are biblical,” states McDowell. “Power being the underlying ideas that are reflected, and form, the structure of how our government was set up and flows out of those ideas.”
That iconic sentence in the Declaration has enormous punch. “Now that statement is full of biblical ideas,” writes McDowell. “First, the founders recognized that absolute truth exists. Right and wrong, moral and immoral, legal and illegal – these emanated from a Creator.”
Ooooh, no wonder the left hates the founding documents. Absolute truth exists? Right and wrong, moral and immoral, legal and illegal – these emanated from a Creator? What a horrible notion!
Yet there it is in black and white. This, folks, is why the left hates the Founding Fathers and all the critical documents that define our nation. They utterly reject the fact that rights come from God. They reject (or rather, redefine) right and wrong, moral and immoral, legal and illegal. They aspire to take religion entirely out of governing our nation.
Which leads to another quote by McDowell: “Christianity has brought great blessing to mankind. … But if we remove the Christian faith and its principles, then we’re going to get worse and worse fruit. That’s what’s been happening the past century.”
This is why progressive public education is desperate to erase, besmirch and rewrite history. Only by refusing to teach children the truth about their national heritage does the left stand a chance to destroy America and create their own socialist utopia from the ashes. No matter how many times someone explains our nation’s Judeo-Christian origins – no matter how many times you recount the Treaty of Tripoli and the historical context behind Jefferson’s “America is not a Christian nation” statement – leftists will pretend those things are irrelevant or out of date.
McDowell elaborated, “We live in God’s world, not in a made-up world of Karl Marx or Darwin or any other political philosopher. God created it to function based upon a set of physical and moral laws. If we violate His laws, we suffer the consequence. The Bible teaches that, and history confirms it.”
But that made-up world is exactly what progressives want. They somehow believe socialism will never lead to tyranny, and obeying the moral constraints set by God has nothing to do with why America has prospered for all these years.
McDowell builds a case that we must return to our founders’ faith, civility and morality. These men weren’t perfect, but they built our republic upon the most solid bedrock ever created: Christianity.
Here’s the thing: Progressives were, well, progressing along, merrily dismantling the founding documents in a slow and methodical way. Then Donald Trump came along. Trump’s insistence that America should return to its roots made the left go bonkers. Forget the slow and methodical dismantling technique they were using before. Instead, they revealed themselves for what they are: a screaming frothing mob intent on reforming the United States on completely communist lines.
A citizen named Andrea Falce penned an insightful letter to the Daily Signal last December. She wrote:
Conservatives tend to see people as the Founding Fathers did, with God-given rights to live and dedicate their lives as they see fit. Many of us shape our perspectives by a faith that includes death, judgment, and heaven or hell as real and inevitable parts of the future. For us, government exists to uphold basic law, order, and infrastructure.
Liberals want to live in a world where they are the gods and there is no life or law beyond themselves. They see government as a power source for reshaping reality. They want to deputize a new truth. A classic example is how it chaps the liberal that men were made men and women were made women. By government, they will legislate an alternative reality. …
Right and wrong are simply relative to whatever serves liberal purposes in the moment. For conservative Christians, the truth is humanity’s to seek, discover, discern, and revere. It is set by God and impossible to remake.
No matter how liberals try to bend it or break it, we still keep searching and abiding by something beyond their dictations. They want all the power, and we can’t give it.
This is why history is important. As Carl Sandburg wrote, “When a nation goes down, or a society perishes, one condition may always be found; they forgot where they came from. They lost sight of what had brought them along.”
This is why the left hates America. It is the political expression of Christian ideas; therefore it must die.
I don’t know whether it’s too late for America to return to its roots. If Trump’s election did nothing else, it stripped the mask off the left and exposed their ugly and horrifying agenda. It is coming down, literally, to a fight between good and evil.
And there’s no guarantee which side will win.
