The political atmosphere in the United States has become poisonous, with Democratic president candidates accusing President Trump of racism and white supremacy and blaming him for mass shootings.
Now, a former FBI assistant director for counterintelligence who is currently an NBC News contributor has taken the vitriol to a new level, suggesting the president might be honoring Adolf Hitler, even if inadvertently, by ordering flags lowered to half-staff to remember the victims of the Ohio and Texas shootings.

Fox News reported Frank Figliuzzi said lowering the flags until Thursday "could be seen by white supremacists as a nod to Adolf Hitler."
He explained that Thursday is Aug. 8, or 8/8, and those number are significant to neo-Nazis and other white supremacists. "H" is the eighth letter of the alphabet, so 8/8 stands for "Heil Hitler," he said.

"The president's either getting really good advice and rejecting it, or he's getting really bad advice. We have to understand the adversary and the threat we’re dealing with, and if we don’t understand how they think we’ll never understand how to counter them, so it's the little things and the language and messaging that matters," Figliuzzi said.
He said he's "not going to imply that he did this deliberately, but I am using it as an example of the ignorance of the adversary that's being demonstrated by the White House."
"So we’re going to be raising the flag back up at dusk on 8/8. No one’s thinking about this. No one’s giving him the advice, or he’s rejecting the advice," Figliuzzi said.
Radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh pounced Wednesday on Figliuzzi's comments.
"Someone willing to go on TV and say this has lost their mind," Limbaugh said. "This guy's a former assistant FBI director!"

"Everybody knows that when two Hs are together, it means 'Heil Hitler,' Limbaugh clowned.
Limbaugh noted Barack Obama was the 44th president, and that two fours together add up to eight, plus Obama's middle name of Hussein starts with an H, the eighth letter of the alphabet.
"So Obama also [suggests] Heil Hitler," Limbaugh joked.
"The media treats this [former FBI] guy as though he honestly has something to say ... and they say Trump has all these horrible things to say."

"Keep in mind that there's a network that's putting them on. A network that is permitting this and promoting this, and I can assure you that none of this is anywhere close to the thinking of anywhere near the majority of the American people."
The president, in fact, has condemned white supremacy and expressed the nation's "outrage" in response to the "monstrous evil."
"Hatred has no place in America," Trump said.
Twitter news aggregator Twitchy pointed out that CNN, MSNBC and others in the establishment media "are all going full-blast with the news that President Trump is a white supremacist. Beto O'Rourke can't shut up about it."
The site said the number of people who "buy this theory" is frightening.
"Even ordering flags flown at half-staff in honor of the mass shooting victims is a white supremacist act now."
One Twitter user commented, "Our media is terrible and actively fanning the flames with garbage like this."
Another, Dan Goldwasser, added, "All they had to do is not be insane. Trump broke them."
JAC responded to a description of Figliuzzi as "very intelligent."
"I'm not sure how you can possibly say that someone who just claimed on national television that flags were lowered to half mast until August 8th as a quasi-tribute to Hitler is either an intelligent or serious person. Do you people not realize how insane you all sound?"
