Democrats’ passionate love affair with lies

Question: What do Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, James Comey, John Brennan, James Clapper, Peter Strzok, Rod Rosenstein, Andrew McCabe, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and Adam Schiff all have in common?

It’s so painfully obvious, I don’t even need to say it.

Americans of sound mind and morals are being forced right now to confront a bizarre but inescapable truth about their nation’s leadership: The Democratic Party has become essentially a gargantuan web of lies and liars – and very little else.

There’s no need to prove this. It’s utterly self-evident – from the Democrats’ pretend three-year “Trump-Russia collusion” scandal, to their pretend “prayerful” impeachment of President Trump over the pretend Ukraine-gate scandal, to their pretend agony over “rampant racism and white supremacism” in the world’s least racist nation, to their pretend terror that global warming will soon render the world uninhabitable, to their dozens of pretend new “gender identities,” to their pretend concern for “women’s reproductive rights” when abortion is based entirely on lying to women and killing their babies.

It’s difficult for normal people, restrained by a functioning conscience, to comprehend how politicians like Adam Schiff, Elizabeth Warren and Nancy Pelosi can look into a TV camera – which is to say, look right into the eyes of millions of people – and flat-out lie.

I couldn’t do it and neither could you. Conscience and inner conflict would paralyze us.

When conservatives attempt to explain the left’s shockingly wanton disregard for truth, they cite truisms like, “These people are captive to a toxic ideology” or “They’re obsessed with power” or “They’re playing to their radical leftwing base” or “They suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome.” All true, but the ultimate reason – as with so many truly big issues in life – has to do with something much deeper.

It has to do with God: Do we honor and submit to the Creator of the Universe and His laws of life, or do we rebel against Him so that we can be, in effect, our own gods?

After all, consider why it is that decent, moral people are generally inclined toward learning the truth about something even when it’s embarrassing, inconvenient or painful to them? It’s because, however imperfect they may be, they have some measure of allegiance to something higher and greater than themselves.

This fidelity to an invisible but ever-present higher law – a quality common to all truly decent people – is, in turn, the basis for all genuine morality and societal harmony, and their byproducts, individual rights and liberty.

Here’s how psychiatrist M. Scott Peck, M.D., describes this phenomenon in his classic bestseller, “People of the Lie”:

Malignant narcissism is characterized by an unsubmitted will. All adults who are mentally healthy submit themselves one way or another to something higher than themselves, be it God or truth or love or some other ideal. They do what God wants them to do rather than what they would desire. “Thy will, not mine, be done,” the God-submitted person says. They believe in what is true rather than what they would like to be true.

The Democratic Party’s leaders and presidential candidates today believe in “what they would like to be true,” rather than what is true. Likewise for their ubiquitous media sycophants.

“In summary,” observes the renowned psychiatrist, “to a greater or lesser degree, all mentally healthy individuals submit themselves to the demands of their own conscience. Not so the evil, however. In the conflict between their guilt [i.e., conscience] and their will, it is the guilt that must go and the will that must win.”

He concludes: “The reader will be struck by the extraordinary willfulness of evil people. They are men and women of obviously strong will, determined to have their own way. There is a remarkable power in the manner in which they attempt to control others.”

Playing god

At core, then, today’s hard left is essentially at war. At war with God, with the Judeo-Christian values and principles underlying Western civilization, with biblical sexual morality, at war with the Ten Commandments, indeed with most everything that has allowed America to become so dazzlingly successful in terms of both prosperity and freedom.

Consider what happens when you’re at war with God: You play god. You become (in your mind) the sole arbiter of truth, of right and wrong, of justice and injustice. Thus, lying becomes, quite literally, a creative force for the left, a tool in service of the “fundamental transformation” of society. As I put it in “The Snapping of the American Mind”: For lying politicians, “lies are ‘magic words,’ the invocation of which represents the exercise of real power – power to impress voters, raise money, demonize critics, win elections, pass legislation, excuse failures, and transform a nation.”

Thus, lying is not something power-mad politicians do just for the usual reasons people sometimes lie – say, to impress others or to avoid the negative consequences of their actions. For deranged revolutionaries obsessed with ruling over others, lying is an art form – a mode of creation, the magical conjuring of an entirely new reality that has never before existed. Through lying, they are (like the gods they imagine themselves to be) speaking into existence a new and far superior reality.

“If there is no God, everything is permitted” goes the famous line from Dostoyevsky’s “The Brothers Karamazov.” That pretty much captures the heart and soul of the neo-Marxist left, including right here in 2020 America. These are people who reject God and His laws, in order that they might play god and reorganize life, law, society and morality as they see fit. For them, there is no objective truth and no higher meaning, and therefore lying confers no shame; they are merely rearranging ideas to creatively re-imagine the world. They see themselves as the playwrights of an epic new masterpiece, destined to replace the old, outdated, racist, sexist, patriarchal, homophobic, superstitious and ignorant Christian drama that has oppressed so many throughout the ages.

And that is why, for the leftist revolutionaries so maniacally ascendant in today’s American politics and culture, lying is not only a potent weapon on the field of battle for the nation’s future.

Because these people have strayed so far from reason and self-evident truth, their lies and delusions now make up not just the substance of their policies and their attacks on opponents, but their very identity, their sense of personal righteousness and purpose. It’s sad, but lies have become the Democratic Party’s daily bread, its comforter, its salvation – and the assurance of what it vainly imagines to be its glorious destiny.
