China spending millions to embed its messaging in U.S. newspapers

By Bob Unruh

It’s no secret that China has an agenda to replace the United States as the leader on world issues, ranging from energy to the economy to politics.

Apparently to that end, it is spending millions to install its messaging in U.S. newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy, the Financial Times and more.

The Free Beacon documented in a report Tuesday that the money is being spent by the China Daily.

Over just the last few months, it paid more than $1.6 million for advertising campaigns in those publications, as well as Time magazine, the report said.

“The Beijing-controlled news agency paid another $1 million to American newspapers, including the L.A. Times, Chicago Tribune, and Houston Chronicle, to print copies of its own publications,” it said.

The flood of cash is being distributed even as U.S. officials are paying more and more attention to propaganda from the Communist-controlled regime, a move that includes requirements from the Department of Justice that several Chinese organizations including China Daily reveal their activities to meet the requirements of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

Previously, the communists published, in multiple American newspapers, what it called “China Watch,” which gave the appearance of ordinary newspaper content but contained what made the Chinese government look good.

“The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post have all severed ties in recent years with China Daily amid complaints that they were publishing CCP propaganda,” the report said.

The New York paper even removed hundreds of sponsored “advertorials” from its website.

The report said Time magazine was paid $700,000 for advertising while the L.A. Times got $272,000 and Foreign Policy and Financial Times got $291,000 and $371,000, respectively.

Time has been featuring articles from China Daily with a “paid partner content” reference, but no mention of its sponsorship by the Chinese Communists, the report said.
