U.S. 5th grader writes Russia’s leader about imminent nuclear war

By Chuck Norris

I remember it like it was yesterday. Maybe many of you do, too.

Thirty-nine years ago this week, on April 25, 1983, the Soviet Union released a letter that supreme Russian leader Yuri Andropov wrote to 10-year-old Samantha Smith, an American fifth grader from Manchester, Maine.

Andropov was responding to Samantha’s initial December 1982 letter to him, in which she was asking if he was going to start a nuclear war. And if not, what was he going to do to prevent it?

She wrote that she was “worrying about Russia and the United States getting into a nuclear war. Are you going to have a war or not?”

In response to Smith’s question, Andropov wrote, “Yes, Samantha, we in the Soviet Union are endeavoring and doing everything so that there will be no war between our two countries, so that there will be no war at all on earth.”

At the invitation of Andropov, Samantha flew to the Soviet Union with her parents for a visit. As History.com reported, “Afterward, she became an international celebrity and peace ambassador, making speeches, writing a book and even landing a role on an American television series. …”

Back then, the U.S. and Soviet Union were embittered Cold War enemies. Four decades later, they are again fanning the flames of that same rival inferno, and mainstream media aren’t helping extinguish any of it.

Thank God, back then we had President Ronald Reagan to come in and save the day amidst the nuclear tensions Americans were feeling. Today, I fear we don’t have the luxury of waiting two more years, until 2024, when we can elect a new and more stalwart president.

Of course, nuclear tensions between the U.S., Russia and NATO are just one global concern. There is also the U.S. placating China’s run-amok power, control, vicious human rights violations and partnering with Russia. And to add insult to injury, there’s the insane U.S.-Iran nuclear deal, which will make the world more dangerous by lifting economic sanctions, giving Iran’s government colossal new oil revenues, and making it even easier for Iran to finance – and hide – its efforts to build nuclear weapons. And of course, Iran is already partnering with Russia to speed up the process, not to mention hell-bent on annihilating our greatest Middle East ally ,Israel.

While global leaders, and God knows what other covert forces, play chess with money, power, military arsenal and all types of underhand subterfuge, they are bringing us again to the brink of nuclear war, bypassing many of the preliminaries leading to a Third World War.

Michael Snyder, author of the bestselling book “7 Year Apocalypse,” recently noted: “Of course the war that we are witnessing is not just a war between Ukraine and Russia. In reality, it is a proxy war between the United States and Russia.”

“The U.S. has been pouring billions of dollars worth of weapons and equipment into Ukraine, it has been giving the Ukrainians real-time intelligence regarding the position of Russian forces, and we have just learned that Ukrainian troops are actually being flown to the United States to be trained, [including meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Defense]”.

Stanford scholar Scott Sagan, explained, “It is estimated that Russia’s stockpile includes 4,477 nuclear warheads, according to a report published by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.” That is a disturbing fact when one considers that CIA Director William Burns said this past week that America “cannot take lightly” the threat that Russia could use nuclear weapons. To prove it, this past week, Russian President Vladimir Putin test-launched their largest intercontinental ballistic missile, dubbed “Satan 2,” which has the potential to carry a large nuclear payload.

As I pointed out in my column last week, “Time to gather your Roundhouse Survival Provisions“: A few years ago, I wrote on the topic: “What the gov’t and media won’t tell you one nuke can do.” The column discussed the very real threat of electromagnetic pulses, or EMP, that could knock out the power grid for months across the whole U.S. from a high-altitude detonation of a single nuclear warhead in the skies above us.

Maybe what this world really needs about now is another “Samantha Smith” to bring some sanity to global governments’ tyrannies and insane despots. I fully understand that both sides were using Samantha like a pawn for their own purposes back then, but her innocence, straight-forward common sense, simple communications and courage brought contagious optimism to the common people. We can use some of that real hope right now.

Unfortunately, on Aug. 25, 1985, Samantha and her dad were both killed when their small plane crashed while traveling together. She was only 13 years old. But her legacy didn’t die with their tragic loss.

History.com again reported, “Smith’s legacy lived on, however. Her mother began the Samantha Smith Foundation, which has as its goal bringing people from different nations and cultures together to share their experiences. In particular, the foundation established a student exchange program with the Soviet Union. In the Soviet Union, news of Smith’s death was met with great sadness. The Russian government responded by issuing a stamp in her honor and naming a mountain after the young girl.”

God, please give us more Samantha Smiths in this world, and help them to grow up quickly and take the helm, before it’s too late.

I believe it’s excellent timing and even providential that the National Day of Prayer is coming up on Thursday, May 5. (These annual observances have been a part of our country from its beginning.). Please, on May 5, join together in your homes, churches, synagogues and other places of worship to beseech the Almighty for His help in our wayward country and world.

As the Good Book says, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”
