(TODAY U.K. NEWS) – Marijuana smokers are slightly more likely to develop lung disease than cigarette users, a shock study suggests. Researchers looked at roughly 150 adults from Ottawa around 50 years old who were either pot users, tobacco smokers or non-smokers.

They found 75 per cent of marijuana users had emphysema compared to 67 per cent of cigarette or cigar users. Emphysema is a lung disease which leaves sufferers struggling to breathe. Those who don’t smoke at all were better off, with just five per cent suffering from the condition.

Study author Dr Giselle Revah, a cardiothoracic radiologist and assistant professor at the University of Ottawa, said she was surprised by the results, which suggested that ‘marijuana has additional synergistic effects on the lungs above tobacco.’
