WATCH: Shooter opens fire in deadly rampage at Mardi Gras parade

A shooter at a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans Sunday night killed a man and injured four other people including a child, according to WWL.

An eyewitness claimed at least 12 shots were fired in the incident near the conclusion of the Krewe of Bacchus parade, the outlet reported. A young girl, a woman and three men were brought to the hospital with injuries, but one of the men ultimately died.

“We were able to find two weapons on scene and also apprehend what we believe to be the shooter,” New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Deputy Chief Hans Ganthier said, without confirming whether the suspect had acted alone, according to WWL. “This is not something we wanted to see. We really wanted to be a safe Mardi Gras and we continue to work toward that end.”

New Orleans’ homicide rate outpaced any other city nationwide in the first half of 2022 when population was taken into account, New Orleans’ Metropolitan Crime Commission found, naming it ” the murder capital of the United States,” WDSU reported. NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson retired at the end of 2022, with hundreds of officers having left the department in the past few years, according to the The Associated Press.

Mardi Gras occurs on Tuesday, but events have already been held in New Orleans for more than a month as part of the 2023 parade schedule, according to USA Today.

The NOPD did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
