(LOUDER WITH CROWDER) – China is continuously realizing that a longstanding policy of female infanticide has less-than-favorable impacts on the population. And it has since taken actions to try and correct this – like encouraging college students to fall in love in the hopes that they'll help increase the birth rate.
Last week, the Sichuan Southwest Vocational College of Civil Aviation told its students and staff that a one-day holiday will be extended for a whole week. The official notice encourage them to "leave the classroom, leave campus, enjoy the nature and feel the beauty of spring and love." Another college in Xiamen also extended its break to a full week.

Students on Weibo aired their suspicions that this break wasn't tooootally about rest and relaxation, with one writing, "I'm sure this is just another attempt to push people into having more babies." And this isn't totally unfounded, since China has been desperately trying to encourage citizens to have more babies, particularly since more people died than were born in the country last year. China's birth rate for 2022 was its lowest ever at 6.77 births per 1000 people. For comparison, the United States's 2022 birth rate was 12.012 births per 1000 people.
