FBI puts Catholics in bull's-eye, now Congress demands Wray explain

The Joe Biden administration long has considered conservatives and Christians as potential domestic terrorists, given their adherence to biblical standards and their related opposition to his ardent advocacy for abortion and transgenderism for children.

But when a Jan. 23 document from the Richmond FBI Field Office characterized traditional Catholics as possible threats, it was too much for Republicans in Congress.

Now they're demanding FBI chief Christopher Wray appear to testify under oath about that incident.

The Washington Examiner explained Wray has been subpoenaed by Congress "over the agency's investigation into Catholic parishes in the United States."

The House Judicial Committee chairman, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, said Wray must explain the document titled, "Interest of Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists in Radical-Traditionalist Catholic Ideology Almost Certainly Presents New Mitigation Opportunities."

The paper included programs by the FBI to "investigate" Catholics, classifying them by their beliefs and relying on information from the discredited Southern Poverty Law Center.

It presumed some kinds of Catholics were "domestic terrorists," Jordan said. And the Examiner report found the FBI used undercover agents to "infiltrate" Catholic churches.

Jordan said his committee is conducting "oversight" of the FBI's ideology and agenda "against Catholic Americans."

Included is the damages to the First Amendment.

"Based on the limited information produced by the FBI to the committee, we now know that the FBI relied on at least one undercover agent to produce its analysis, and that the FBI proposed that its agents engage in outreach to Catholic parishes to develop sources among the clergy and church leadership to inform on Americans practicing their faith. This shocking information reinforces our need for all responsive documents, and the committee is issuing a subpoena to you to compel your full cooperation," Jordan explained.

The FBI, when its agenda was uncovered, suddenly claimed the work that produced the paper wasn't up to standards and it was "withdrawn."

Jordan, however, is accusing the FBI of preventing, or trying to prevent, the committee from "fully assessing" the situation.
