Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis of New York blasted Democratic Mayor Eric Adams of New York City over his plan to house migrants in private residences.

“It’s absolutely outrageous. Not only does New York City have a housing crisis, we have an affordability crisis,” Malliotakis told Fox Business host Ashley Webster on “Varney and Company.” “People are renting apartments in New York City for thousands and thousands of dollars. People are having difficulty paying their mortgage, paying their rent, keeping up with their property taxes that have increased year after year, and the mayor is now telling hard-working taxpayers that they need to pay so an individual who crossed into our country illegally at the border last week can live rent-free? I mean, what planet are we living on?”

Adams said during a Monday news conference that houses of worship would open up in July to house migrants and suggested putting migrants in residents’ “spare rooms” to accommodate some of the 72,000 migrants that have arrived. Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York has clashed with suburban counties who have raised objections to taking in migrants, according to CBS New York.

“The mayor, I’ve said it before, needs to challenge — and he is, by the way, finally, after I’ve been calling for him for a year to challenge this right-to-shelter law, it’s finally going to go before a judge because this was intended for homeless New Yorkers, right, citizens who fell on difficult times, became homeless, to give them a shelter, not for individuals who just entered our country last week or citizens of other countries,” Malliotakis said.

New York City is under a consent decree to provide shelter for qualifying homeless individuals stemming from a 1981 settlement, Bloomberg reported.

Republican Govs. Greg Abbott of Texas and Doug Ducey of Arizona began busing migrants to sanctuary cities in 2022. Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent two planes with migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, in September, prompting a meltdown from liberals.

“This is going to continue to just incentivize individuals to come over our border,” Malliotakis said of New York City’s efforts. “That’s exactly what’s going to happen. He says they keep coming. They keep coming because you are giving them free housing.”
