Woman in wheelchair summits state’s highest peak with help from volunteers

(KOCO) – Thanks to dozens of volunteers, a woman in a specialized wheelchair reached the summit of Mt. Elbert, Colorado’s highest peak. Chris Layne has been in a wheelchair for almost seven years now after an accident while hiking in Clear Creek Canyon, Colorado.

“I never thought by seven steps into my hike I would be paralyzed at the bottom of a canyon,” Layne said.

She fell the equivalent of eight stories down. “I lift up my wrist and I knew it was broken and then when I was touching my lower body I couldn’t feel anything at all, and I knew right then I was paralyzed,” she said.
