It has long been the U.S. government’s position that the only solution to Palestinian/Israeli violence is creating two separate states. In the wake of the brutal Hamas Oct. 7, 2023, raid into Israel and the massacre of 1,200 of its citizens, Democrats naively signed off on a Senate resolution demanding such a solution be implemented. But the harsh reality of the state of Israel and a Palestinian state coexisting side-by-side lacks feasibility for three reasons.
The first is 1,400 years of Islamic history. It has portrayed Judaism as the least deserving of all other religions to survive. While Islam does provide options other than death to these other religions, when it comes to Judaism, eradication is the only solution.
While the issue has existed since the days of Muhammad, it reared its ugly head in December 2017 after President Donald Trump announced his decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Imams delivered sermons across the world, including the U.S., that successfully triggered anti-Jewish hatred among their Muslim followers. The inflammatory anti-Jewish sermons have continued in the wake of the Oct. 7 massacre.
Most of these sermons shared a common Hadith quote. The Hadith is a collection of traditions allegedly containing sayings by the Prophet Muhammad which, in addition to the Quran, are to guide how Muslims live their lives. The quote promotes the mass slaughter of Jews by Islam’s faithful.
What was cited was as scary as it is absurd. It makes the claim that on Judgment Day, inanimate objects will speak out, betraying where Jews are hiding: “Judgment Day will not come until the Muslims fight the Jews. The Jews will hide behind the stones and the trees, and the stones and the trees will say, oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew hiding behind me – come and kill him.”
Westerners tend to dismiss the quote as simply metaphoric in nature; however, Islam’s faithful, such as Hamas extremists, do not.
An imam in Madison, Wisconsin, delivered a post-Oct. 7 sermon, calling for the genocide of all Jews, labeling them as “unjust, criminal, corrupt oppressors.” He claimed it was Allah’s “divine promise” that Muslims would eventually execute all Jews.
Israelis have long known how ingrained such hateful rhetoric is within the Muslim psyche. However, now coupled with the barbarity of the Hamas raid, the chances a two-state solution would succeed are nonexistent for this reason alone.
But other reasons exist as well.
A second reason the two-state solution will never work requires a brief reference to the Genovese family.
Most Americans recognize the “Genovese” name. It is considered the most powerful Mafia family in the U.S. It boasts about 270 “made” members.
Obviously, the Genovese family thrives on crime, which translates into a rather luxurious lifestyle for its members. What are the chances of the family suddenly experiencing an epiphany in which it decides to turn away from such a life to provide a better one for the residents of the states in which they are influential? Obviously, this would never happen.
In this light, now consider the wealth enjoyed by leaders, both past and present, of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Hamas.
When Yasser Arafat died, he was chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization and president of the PA. Yet, never having owned or operated a business in his life, he left this material world with at least a billion dollars in his personal accounts. That represented quite a decline from the $3 billion financial empire Israeli intelligence believed he controlled in the mid-1990s.
Granted, Arafat did not openly flaunt his wealth, living rather modestly in the Palestinian city of Ramallah. But he was giving his wife, Sura, $100,000 per month to live in Paris. French authorities believe she received bank transfers totalling $11.5 million. Not bad considering much of Arafat’s wealth came via donations from the Gulf states and Western nations supposedly for the benefit of the Palestinian people, who never saw a penny of it.
A 1997 PA audit revealed a vast amount of corruption. Therefore, Arafat did what any tyrant would do – he ordered all future audits to be kept secret.
Upon Arafat’s 2004 death, the surviving PA leadership had to negotiate with Sura to gain access to the remaining funds, paying her richly to do so.
Arafat was succeeded by Mahmoud Abbas. In 2012, Abbas was estimated to be worth at least $100 million. Despite U.S. donation cutbacks to the PA, Abbas used $50 million in PA funds to buy a luxurious private jet as his people survived on dollars per day.
Hamas too has its hands in the pockets of the Palestinian people. Its leaders have amassed tremendous wealth that would have even made Arafat envious.
The top three leaders of Hamas are believed to have a collective wealth of $11 billion, while enjoying life in Qatar, far away from the poverty of their own people. The government there houses them in luxury hotels, some with breathtaking views of the sea.
The son of one of these Hamas leaders, Maaz Haniyeh, known as “the father of real estate” in Gaza, has a collection of villas and buildings – although after all the fighting, they probably have far less value. But Haniyeh undoubtedly is not worried as there is plenty more money available for the needed repairs to his real estate empire. Meanwhile, he lives the life of a playboy that would make Hunter Biden jealous.
Thus, the reason the Genovese family would never surrender its corrupt lifestyle, ending the enormous cash flow it enjoys, is the same reason why neither PA nor Hamas leaders would surrender theirs. PA and Hamas leaders willingly let 2 million Palestinians live in squalor, recruiting future members from among them who are blindly willing to sacrifice their lives to continue the fight against Jews.
The final reason the two-state solution is a no go is that all pro-U.S. Arab leaders fail to embrace it, doing nothing to make this solution happen. Why? Because they, unlike the U.S., grasp a Palestinian history of subversion and terrorism against other Arab states. Thus, a Palestinian state means permanent unrest in the region.
Just like North and South Korea will never become a single state while the former is led by the Kim family dictatorship, it is unrealistic to believe Palestine and Israel can become two peaceful neighboring states if Hamas survives.
The sad reality is that as long as Palestinians believe stones and trees will speak on Judgment Day, they will believe the fight against Jews must never end. Meanwhile, their leaders will live safely and in style.
