The man who flew more than 300 miles for 1 last bite of this cake

(SF GATE) – Last week, out of complete desperation, Mike Metz of Los Angeles hopped a flight to the Bay Area for a slice of his favorite maple pound cake. And his wife’s must-have s’mores bar.

Without so much as a second thought, the TV writer and father of two booked a hotel, flew into San Jose, rented a car and drove straight to Icing on the Cake in Los Gatos. His favorite bakery of 39 years was for sale, and he hadn’t visited it in over two years. He needed to be there and see his friend, owner Lynn Magnoli, to make sure she was OK. And stock up for the winter.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been to a bakery that does that many things so well,” Metz said over the phone. “There’s a quality and consistency there. Some of it is nostalgia for sure. It’s the bakery every town wishes it had.”
