Amid multiple comments from administration officials in recent days that the Iran war could be winding down, President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that there are discussions now with “A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME” there.
He said, on social media, “The United States of America is in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran. Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched.’ This will be in retribution for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old Regime’s 47 year ‘Reign of Terror.’ Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
The Daily Signal reported Trump’s statement about “making progress” in negotiations.
But the report noted there’s been no identification so far of the individuals or factions involved, and whether it actuially involves a new power structure in Iran.
He had told the Daily Signal on Sunday that a deal to resolve the conflict “could be soon.”
The report explained, “The president said last week he would pause attacks on Iran’s energy plants for 10 days, which would be until April 6. Iran has sent the price of oil upward by attacking oil tankers attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Brent crude futures jumped by $2.42, or 2.2%, to almost $115 a barrel on Monday morning, and were on course for a record monthly rise.”
Trump, over the weekend, had said there were negotiations “directly and indirectly” with Iran.
He said the Operation Epic Fury already has “bombed” some 13,000 targets in Iran but said there still remain about 3,000.
On Friday, 3,500 US Marines and sailors also arrived in the Middle East on the USS Tripoli, amid a broader Pentagon order to deploy 10,000 troops to the region.
