“Keep your laws off my body” is a popular abortionette slogan, but like so many feminist ideas, it is an observably nonsensical assertion. It is not at all difficult to find a whole host of laws that directly concern our bodies. There are laws dictating how we must clothe them, what we are permitted to ingest in them, how we are allowed to transport them from place to place and whom they are permitted to sexually penetrate. It is a rhetorical device, nothing more, and a remarkably silly one at that.

Unfortunately, the panoply of laws concerning one’s body are merely the tip of the legal iceberg. Americans are now living in a literally totalitarian society. Totalitarianism does not necessarily indicate that the government is slaughtering large quantities of the citizenry, although one could certainly argue that the body count for federally funded abortions is at least four times higher than the estimated 2,814,500 people killed in National Socialist death camps. To describe a government as totalitarian is not a reference to its behavior, but rather, to the limits it respects. And increasingly, what we are seeing in Washington is a government that does not respect any limits, least of all the limits imposed by the will of the American people and the United States Constitution.

The politicians and bureaucrats in Washington do not respect the sovereign right of nations, as we have seen in Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt and now Libya. How the Egyptians and Libyans are ruled, and who rules over them, is of absolutely zero national interest to the American people right now. Nor does Washington respect its own laws; just last week the Federal Reserve’s Consumer Advisory Council declared that it had found “no wrongful foreclosures” despite the fact that mortgage banks have been forced to withdraw more than 150,000 perjured affidavits that were filed in support of blatantly wrongful foreclosures.

It does not even respect the absence of economic activity, as the Obamacare insurance mandate is trying to claim jurisdiction over the non-purchases of health-care insurance through the Interstate Commerce Clause. It is a sad evidence for the decline and fall of America when literally Orwellian language is used to justify the further expansion of federal power. Black is white, war is peace, and an absence of commerce is commerce.

One would think it would be hard to top that last example of federal totalitarianism. And yet, it has already been done. For now, the Food and Drug Administration is attempting to take the position that your own genetic code is a controlled substance over which it has the controlling authority and concerning which you must be prevented from receiving any information without first going through an FDA-approved authority. In the words of Alabama Rep. Parker Griffiths, who was one of the politicians overseeing the 2010 congressional hearing into the direct-to-consumer genetic testing industry, “It’s very difficult to protect the public from itself and its desire to be healthy.”

Americans need federal protection from themselves and their desire to be healthy almost as much as they need protection from Egyptian and Iraqi dictators or an increase in the federal debt ceiling. The FDA’s assertion that it has the right to control access to the genetic code of every individual American is a claim of slave ownership far more potentially pernicious than any claim ever made by slave-owners prior to the 13th Amendment.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the federal government is completely and utterly out of control, spewing nonsense, issuing irrational threats and stumbling around the world stage like a belligerent drunk with an empty wallet. It is also abundantly clear that neither Democrats nor Republicans are willing to address the growing series of challenges that will eventually cause the collapse and disintegration of the Union that Abraham Lincoln slaughtered so many to save. The policies advocated by politicians ranging from Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi to Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin are all guaranteed to make the situation worse than it already is, much worse. Cutting $100 billion here and there, as Republicans are attempting to do, will not make any difference at all as millions of immigrants swarm over the borders, millions of indebted homeowners lose their houses, private debt continues to contract, tax revenues continue to fall and Washington finds more foreign battlegrounds in which to entangle American soldiers.

Americans no longer enjoy the limited government of their forefathers. They suffer from limitless government. TSA is an apt acronym today. But it does not stand for the Transportation Security Administration; it stands for the Totalitarian State of America.
