Prince George’s County Public Schools officials have responded to a shocking video of a substitute teacher who appears to be beating students with a belt at Gwynn Park Middle School in Brandywine, Maryland

A shocking video shows a substitute teacher in Maryland whipping students with a belt in a classroom while several children scream and scramble across the floor to get away from him.

The incident took place at Gwynn Park Middle School in Brandywine, Maryland, according to WTTG-TV.

A grandmother of one of the students said the episode took place on May 15.

teacher_belt2Prince George’s County Public Schools officials have not revealed the teacher’s name.

WTTG-TV reported, “It is not clear if [the kids] were roughhousing and he was trying to break it up or if they were trying to hide from the teacher.”

The school district says the substitute teacher improperly disciplined the students and has been removed from the classroom. Officials also say law enforcement is now involved.

The school has released the following statement:

“On Friday, May 15, a substitute teacher used improper actions to discipline students while in one of our classes at Gwynn Park Middle School. The substitute teacher has been removed from the classroom and the matter has been referred to the appropriate law enforcement agencies. Prince George’s County Public Schools does not condone this type of behavior and it is not representative of the level of professionalism and respectful conduct of the team at the school. PGCPS works to create a respectful and safe environment for all students and staff.”
