Eight children ranging from 18 months old to 14 years old have been killed in a mass shooting Sunday in Shreveport, Louisiana.

“This was a domestic call in nature,” said Shreveport Police spokesman Christopher Bordelon, referring to the initial call that came in just after 6 a.m. as 10 people in total were shot in the Cedar Grove residential neighborhood.

“You have three different scenes, the shooting itself occurred just down the road over here, the 300 block of West 79th,” Bordelon told reporters. “There’s also another shooting related to this on Harrison Street, and then there’s an adjacent residence on West 79 where one of the victims ran to after the shooting.”

“The individual responsible once leaving this scene performed a carjacking right here in close proximity to the corner of West 79th and Lynnwood, at which point in time, Shreveport police patrol officers got behind that vehicle in a chase incident,” Bordelon said.

He indicated officers shot and killed the suspect during the chase through Bossier Parish.

“We do believe him to be the only individual that fired gunshots at these locations here,” Bordelon said.

A motive remains unclear and authorities were tight-lipped concerning the suspect, but Bordelon said “some of the children” in the homes “were his descendants.”

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said: “This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport.”

“It’s a terrible morning, and we all mourn for the victims,” he added.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said on X: “Heartbreaking tragedy in Shreveport this morning – 8 children were senselessly killed and multiple others were injured. My team is in touch with local law enforcement as more details emerge.

We’re holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. And we are grateful to the Shreveport, Bossier, and Louisiana State Police for their swift response.
