‘For working American families’: Trump suspends tariff to lower price of key grocery staple

Under Joe Biden’s administration in the White House, “beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history.”

That’s according to a statement from President Donald Trump who on Friday announced a suspension of tariffs on beef for 90 days in an effort to help American consumers directly.

“Today, I concluded a deal to substantially lower the price of ground beef for working American families. As everyone knows, under President Biden, beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history. As we work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers, for the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff. We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices. This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he posted on social media.

It was in a report posted only days ago that America’s beef herd was described as the “smallest it has been for 75 years,” and that’s one reason for the highest costs for consumers.

But that news was not all bad.

“The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture figures show herd numbers stabilized this year and have begun to tick up,” the report said. “The total number of cattle and calves totaled 94.2 million on July 1, an increase of 200,000 from last year.”

The America First Policy Institute said the improvement was because of policy reforms during the Trump administration.

“Are we going to have the beef hamburger, are we going to have the opportunity to have a farm … to pursue our American dream, whatever that may look like, or do you have communist grocery stores and artificial meat that Bill Gates is producing,” said AFPI executive vice president Ashley Hayek, referencing ideas about lab-grown meat and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan for government-run grocery stores.

Reports explained the average price of a pound of ground beef today is $6.89, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, compared with $3.88 during the COVID pandemic.

Politico said, “It’s not the first time the president has weighed a temporary tariff reduction on beef. Trump shelved a long-telegraphed White House plan to do just that in May, amid fierce resistance from Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.”
