‘Treason’: Congressional candidate vows to carry on Mexico’s ‘fight’ while in the House

Ilhan Omar, a Somali immigrant who is a member of Congress representing a Somali-populated district in Minnesota, has explained how she watches out for Somalia while in office.

Now, apparently, Mexico soon will have representation in the U.S. House.

That’s becauser Claire Valdez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, is running for office in New York’s 7th District and promised, “215 years ago, Mexicans fought an empire that demanded our land and our labor. And we won. I’ll carry that fight with me to Congress as New York’s first Mexican American representative. And I’m strengthened not just by Mexico’s history but its present. Last month I met comrades in Morena who are standing up to the empires and corporations that have always taken from us – and building a government for the working class. ¡Viva la Independencia, Viva México!”

Her stunningly self-promoting interpretation of American democracy left people reacting.

Social media commenters responded:

“Ahhhhh…..your first priority should be America.”

“Comrades???”

“Run for office in Mexico if you care so much about it.”

“Should be prosecuted under treason.”

“Why English? In Mexico they speak Spanish only. That’s your audience: in Mexico.”

“What does Mexico or Spain have to do with your NY congressional run?”

“That is called being a traitor.”

“A far-left Democrat has sparked a massive social media furor after announcing her intention to represent a foreign nation in Congress instead of America. On September 16, New York Congressional candidate Claire Valdez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, took to X to swear her allegiance to her comrades in Mexico. For context, September 16 is the day Mexico celebrates its independence from Spain. Valdez, a Mexican-American, started by bragging about Mexico’s successful fight for independence from Spain before bragging about her intention of building a working class in the country. She closed by saying long live Mexico in Spanish.”
