‘A HERO!’ Man who took out killer was armed, in violation of school rule

A “community member” who was near an Oregon elementary school, and was armed in defiance of school bans, now is being hailed as a hero for following a teen shooter into the school and taking him out before he could unleash to full extent of the hell that apparently was planned.

The shooter, identified only as a Bend, Oregon, teen, did kill three children and an adult in the school.

But he was taken down by the “heroic community member” within minutes of his having accessed the school by shooting through locked doors, reports confirm.

The hero was not immediately identified, nor were the victims or their attacker.

Gov. Tina Kotek praised the man for his intervention in the Silver Rail Elementary School events.

“To the community member who heroically intervened … your actions carry a heavy emotional burden and I want you to know my thoughts are with you as well,” Kotek said.

Some reports identified him as a father of a student at the school but those details were not confirmed.

The hero had “engaged” the 16-year-old shooting, said Bend police chief Mike Krants.

The Daily Mail reported the shooter was armed with a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother, and killed children ages 5, 8 and 11, as well as one teacher.

Authorities confirmed the school district there had banned guns from its premises, a ban obviously violated by the attacker.

Newsweek confirmed that the shooting, and its conclusion, triggered more debate over whether having schools as gun-free zones actually was a wise choice.

The Bend-La Pine Schools’ website says that “firearms/weapons are prohibited on all district property.”

In fact, the district even banned those who hold concealed handgun licenses to carry on campus.

School board member Melissa Barnes Dholakia claimed the ban “allowed us to complete the commitment that we already had in place of having gun-free schools.”

Mario Nawfal, a podcast host, wrote on X: “A random bystander took down the Oregon school shooter in under three minutes…in a district that BANS guns on campus.”

Reports revealed another student, age 7, and another teacher also were injured and hospitalized.

The Daily Mail confirmed, “The events began when a man driving a red Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in the school parking lot spotted the teen carrying a long gun approach the building. …The driver then confronted the teenager, who in turn fired numerous shots at the civilian and his truck, shattering a rear window and leaving six large bullet holes in the vehicle. At that point, the assailant allegedly threw his gun over the school fence and hopped over – prompting the driver to call Deschutes County dispatchers at around 12.59 pm.”

The suspect forced his way into the school by shooting at locked doors, and went inside, only to be shot and killed by the hero shortly later.

A motive for the violence wasn’t clear.

Mayor Melanie Kebler said, “‘A school should be a safe place where children can learn and feel secure. What happened today should never happen.”
