A hurricane has been stirred up for the Catholic Church, and other Christians, after a Vatican report purportedly about “controversial” issues within the church suddenly changed direction and described homosexuality as an “emerging” issue.
A story at the Federalist explains it was a 32-page report by Study Group No. 9 published by the Vatican’s General Secretariat of the Synod that left a multitude of faithful concerned, even outraged.
“The LGBTQ community is sinful by definition and must repent and change their behaviors,” one responded on social media.
“Homosexuality is a sin, that’s church teaching. Always has been and always will. You agents of satan can’t change that.”
The report explained the study group included testimonies from those living a homosexual lifestyle who claim to have been wounded by the church’s teaching that homosexuality is “contrary to the natural law.”
The group had been assigned to examine “controversial” issues in the church, but then decided to frame homosexuality as “emerging.”
“That move, explained early on in the report, set the stage for suggesting a shift from sound Catholic doctrine about marriage and sexuality to what canon lawyer and pastor Father Gerald Murray called a ‘full-fledged endorsement of the homosexual lifestyle,'” the report said.

Catholic teaching states marriage is between a man and a woman, but the study group insisted Catholics “can talk about same-sex ‘marriage’ in a way that is equal to marriage between a man and a woman,” the report said.
The report calls for an “encounter” with Jesus “in relation to the diverse situations of life and the many cultural contexts.”
It also cites the testimony of a homosexual witness who insisted his claim “bears witness to the discovery that sin, at its root, does not consist in the (same-sex) couple relationship, but in a lack of faith in a God who desires our fulfilment.”
The report suggests that choosing a same-sex lifestyle is not sinful itself.
Priests and others faithful to the church say the report caves in to moral relativism in making a foundational shift that homosexual marriage is an “open question,” despite its having been decided long ago as in total conflict with Catholic teachings.
The report said, “Bishop Joseph Strickland, bishop emeritus of Tyler, Texas, called the report an ’emergency in the Church,’ a ‘direct assault on Catholic moral doctrine,’ and an “attempt to normalize or redefine homosexual relationships’ for the sake of having the church appear ‘more acceptable to the modern world.'”
He said, however, the church doesn’t belong to the modern world, but to Jesus.
In a statement to LifeSiteNews, German Cardinal Gerhard Müller, the former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, commented that all the synod groups are suspect as they are skeptical of central teachings of the church.
