Nurses at an Alabama hospital were determined to grant the dying wish of one of their patients: to be baptized … by immersion.
The women had been caring for Jeannie Guffey in the ICU of Huntsville Hospital as she deteriorated from lung cancer.
World reports: “After some online research, the nurses all chipped in and bought a kiddie pool from Walgreens, using their own money, and had it delivered via DoorDash to the hospital. They used an air pump to inflate it, then created a makeshift hose out of ventilator tubing to fill the pool with water from the hospital room’s sink.”
The nurses were Erin Powers, Kaitlin Swaim and Emily Owens, according to an account posted by the hospital.
“This was a last wish that was very important to the patient and her family, so we had to find a way,” said Owens.
After delivery and filling of the pool, Guffey’s son officiated the baptism.
The family was thankful for the staff going above and beyond. Guffey’s daughter-in-law remarked, “That was a total God thing. And those nurses will be special to us forever.”
After the baptism, Guffey went home and died about a week later.
